Buying Bed Linen: Your Guide
The right bedding makes the difference between a good night’s sleep and a poor one. Choose the bedding you need to be comfortable, cozy and warm – or cool and calm in the summer. First take a look at your bed and measure it for size; it’s vital to buy bedding that fits your bed.
Next, choose a mattress pad or topper to give you that extra layer of padding and provide protection against allergens. Quilted and padded toppers are luxurious and great for any bed. The best pillows for your bed help you snooze safely and in style. Choose the firmness and the shape of the pillow carefully, based on your own preferences and sleeping style. Sheets should be good quality and fit the bed perfectly.
Bedspreads include comforters, quilts, duvets and coverlets, and they provide you with warmth and security, as well as make your bed stand out in style. Your choice of bedspread depends on the climate and your décor - bedspreads are available in a vast array for styles, colors and patterns.
How to Pick Pillow Firmness
Since you spend around one-third of your life asleep, your pillow should be the most comfortable you can find for your needs. And firmness is a crucial aspect of pillow comfort. The firmness of your pillow – the type and amount of support it gives your head and neck - makes all the difference to the quality of your night’s sleep. It can even prevent headaches and backache.
The way you sleep affects how firm your pillow needs to be. Choose a medium-firm pillow if you sleep on your back to cradle the natural curve of your upper spine without elevating your head too much. If you sleep on your side you should look at a firm pillow or a super-firm pillow. This type of pillow gives you an even surface to sleep on that keeps your body in a healthy straight line. When you sleep on your stomach, pick a soft pillow that keeps your head comfy at a natural angle.
If you shift a lot in your sleep, go for medium-firm.
Your Guide to Thread Count for Sheets
You may have heard that the higher the thread count, the better the sheets but that is not necessarily the case. Quality bed sheets come in all thread counts and many different weaves - there is a minimum thread count you should look out for, but much will come down to personal preference.
Thread count is the number of threads woven horizontally and vertically in one square inch of bed sheet. In general, a bed sheet with a thread count of 200 or above will be good quality. Above this, it is down to your preference – sheets with higher thread counts may be softer or not depending on the cotton used and the weave.
In general, higher thread counts mean sheets that will wear well over time. However, sheets with thread counts in the thousands are usually made up with extra threads woven horizontally and they are not necessarily thousands of times better. Look for Egyptian cotton, which experts believe is among the best in the world, and Italian weave, and feel the softness.
