Shopping Hub in Fairview Heights
One of the youngest cities in the metro-east area, Fairview Heights wasn’t incorporated until 1969. But that doesn’t mean it was uninhabited; people have lived in the area since the early 19th century. Originally known as Ridge Prairie, German and other European immigrants began farming in the area in the mid-1800s.
The intersection of Lincoln Trial and Bunkum Road was one of the community’s early hubs. It featured an inn, a brickyard, and the original one-room Grant School. According to legend, Abraham Lincoln once stayed at the inn. The trading post and tavern, known as the Ridge Prairie Saloon, operated by Hendy Becherer, was another local center of activity. The Dandy Inn building stands where the saloon was originally located. The first of seven coal mines opened in 1903.
Eventually, Prairie Ridge became Fairview, as named in a marketing advertisement by a land developer. The expansion of the streetcar into the area made it attractive to families who wanted to enjoy the benefits of country living and the proximity of city amenities. Subdivisions and stores began popping up in the 1940s and ‘50s, but the town remained a quiet crossroads between Collinsville, Belleville, O’Fallon, and East St. Lewis. In 1957 the last coal mine stopped operating.
Points of interest include Hey Guys Comedy Club and the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a 13th-century Native American urban center with monuments, ruins of a home, and other artifacts in nearby Collinsville. In addition, Fairview is a shopping hub for people throughout the region, featuring the St. Clair Square Mall, other shops, and plenty of restaurants.
