What to Know About Largo
It is the largest city in Pinellas County and the fourth largest in the Tampa Bay area. Incorporated in 1905, Largo became Pinellas County's first municipality to adopt a council-manager government. Largo switched from a town to a city several times until it settled on being a city in 1974. Exporting agriculture products supported the city until the 1960s, when population growth transformed it into a bedroom community.
From 1905 to 2010, the city grew in area from 9/16 square mile to approximately 19 square miles of rural farming and subsequently grew to be the third-largest city in the state's most densely populated county.
Part of Largo's rapid growth over the years was sparked by people moving into the area after World War II, and in response, Largo increased its size by annexing land that surrounded it. The farms, ranches, and groves have given way to shopping centers and homes. Due to its location on the Pinellas Peninsula, near to the Gulf of Mexico, the city's climate is warm and balmy. Winters are generally drier, with most of the rainfall occurring in the winter.
Largo is home to the Florida Botanical Gardens, where you can enjoy flora, fauna, and natural resources in motivational surroundings. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and take in the stunning sunsets in this family-friendly area. The city features 500 acres of green space that includes nature parks and athletic fields. The park system consists of 20 parks with more than 11 miles of walking trails and numerous opportunities to kayak, canoe, and paddleboard.
The city's four-mile Green Trail system connects 12 parks and city facilities. In 1995, Largo Central Park opened on the site of the old Pinellas County Fairgrounds. It is the setting for the Largo Central Park Performing Arts Center and the Largo Public Library. The Performing Arts Center is a multi-purpose venue that hosts a variety of local, regional, and national artist and groups.
